Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge
Alexandria, VA
April 2006 - 2007
About the project
The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge is a bascule bridge that spans the Potomac River between the independent city of Alexandria, Virginia, and Prince George's County, Maryland. The bridge carries Interstate 95 and Interstate 495 (the Capital Beltway). The drawbridge on the original bridge opened approximately 260 times a year, disrupting traffic on the beltway, which carries approximately 250,000 cars each day. The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge is a five year, multi-million dollar project to provide a replacement bridge for the heavily traveled Route 95 Bridge.
ThyssenKrupp Safway, Inc. Bridge Division products were used by the painting and mechanical contractors during construction of the bridge. All three of the platforms were designed to travel down the bridge on trolley systems mounted on the platforms. A Space Frame platform was used in the area between the V-shaped piers. Steel Truss Frames were used on the edges of the bridge, along with QuikDeck™, which was used inside the V-shaped piers.
